Ask A Shawnee Mission Roofer: How To Choose Shingle Color

I get all kinds of questions as an experienced Shawnee Mission roofer and I’m happy to answer them here. It’s all in a day’s work, really. Ten years ago, no one would have asked, “What color shingle should I choose from my roof?” Back then, you would simply choose the color that matched your house — brown or grey, typically. Modern architectural shingles come in all sorts of aesthetics nowadays, so understandably, it can be difficult to select the best color.

Here are a few areas I tell local homeowners to consider …

Shawnee Mission Roofer Recommendations

The roofing you choose will largely depend upon the type of roof you have.

  • Is it low-slung? Try white or light grey to make your house look taller.
  • Is it steep-pitched? Try black, dark grey, dark brown or dark blue so your home seems less towering.

Whichever color you choose, any professional Shawnee Mission roofer will tell you that architectural shingles like GAF’s Timberline Series or CertainTeed’s Landmark Series offer the most curb appeal and the best visual effects.

Choosing The Best Shingle Color To Match Your Home

  • Choose contrasting colors to accentuate your roof.
  • Choose complementary colors to blend your roof in with the brick or siding.

As you can see, both styles have their own appeal. Personally, many of my favorite Shawnee Mission roofs are contrasting, but my own home is brown — which just naturally lent itself to brown shingles. It really all depends on what look you’re going for.

What Do The Neighbors Have?

A lot of the roofing styles we put up tend to change based on neighborhood. For example, you’ll see a row of gray shingled homes in one area, and then a row of tan-colored rooftops in another. Some localities have specifications on which colors you’re allowed to have. You don’t need to be a carbon copy of your neighbors, but you don’t want to be the only house in the entire neighborhood with a crimson colored roof either.

Ask Your Roofer About Energy Savings!

A lot of people ask me about the Federal Tax Incentives and how they can get roofing materials that qualify. For GAF, there is the Timberline Cool Series with: Cool Antique  Slate, Cool Barkwood, Cool WeatheredWood and Cool White. For CertainTeed, you can pick from the Landmark Solaris line: Aged Cedar, Crystal Gray, Dusky Clay, Max Def Burnt Sienna, Max Def Heather Blend, Max Def Resawn Shake, Max Def WeatheredWood and Sunset Shake. They also offer a few energy efficient roof shingle colors in their regular Landmark Line: Silver Birch, Mist White and Star White. If you choose any of these roofing colors, you will be eligible to get a tax credit worth 30 % of the materials’ cost, not to mention you’ll save an estimated 20 percent a year on utility bills.
